Omnicom Group has acquired a majority interest in Indian field marketing player Gotocustomer Services India.

The deal marks its first major Indian purchase since Asia-Pacific chairman and CEO Michael Birkin (pictured) moved to the region in 2005. While Birkin declined to disclose the value of the deal, he told Media that the Indian field marketing sector is primed for growth, given the rapid rise of the country's middle class.

"India is as important to Omnicom as China," he said.

The investment follows the acquisition of China field marketing specialist Unisono earlier this year (Media, 14 March).

Asia has produced four gold Lions in the promo Lions category, with wins for Japan’s Dentsu (‘Ask Milk’) and Hakuhodo (‘The tyrant Habeneros’), JWT India (‘Firestarter’) - pictured - and 10AM Communications Singapore (‘White Puzzle’).

Crispin Porter + Bogusky of the US triumphed overall though, with its ‘Fast’ campaign for VW Cars beating another favourite, Whybin\TBWA of New Zealand’s ‘Be the Ball’ campaign for adidas.

The VW campaign for the new sporty GTI was based on the concept of ‘fast’ through quirky TVCs and a plastic figure, with copies selling handsomely over eBay.

 

i-Weekly celebrates turning 25

Singapore’s i-Weekly is planning a raft of events to coincide with its 25th anniversary, including a commemorative mini-issue and a “high-voltage” concert.

The MediaCorp title will also run a series of road shows and promotions, leading up to a year-end event that will feature a number of local celebrities. The June 9 concert, meanwhile, is expected to feature finalists from Channel U talent quest ‘SuperBand’.
