LONDON - The NUJ has attacked planned editorial cutback plans at Express Newspapers by demanding justification for every one of the 70 jobs it reportedly plans to axe.

The job losses will be across Daily Express, Sunday Express, Daily Star and Daily Star Sunday. The company is in a consultation process and has invited journalists to apply for voluntary redundancy.

Barry Fitzpatrick, NUJ head of publishing, said: "It's inconceivable they can continue to produce competitive newspapers with the level of staff that will remain if these cuts go through."

The NUJ has attacked the paper's proprietor Richard Desmond for the number of redundancies that have been made since he took over in 2001.
