HONG KONG Consumers International (CI), the world federation of consumer groups, has selected Hong Kong as the host city for its next global congress in 2011.

Held every four years, the last Consumers International World Congress took place in Sydney in 2007.

“The World Congress is probably the single mostimportant event for CI in its global

campaigning,” said professor Anthony Cheung, chairman, Hong Kong Consumer Council,

speaking at the signing ceremony in Hong Kong last month.

Hong Kong was on a short list with Germany and Macau during the selection process.
The Hong Kong Consumer Council led the bid for the event.

It expects to bring over 700 delegates from 100 countries to the congress, which will be held
at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in November 2011.

Connie Lau, chief executive, Hong Kong Consumer Council, told CEI Asia Pacific that government support, particularly from the Commerce and Education Department, was the most important factor in the city’s win.

She added that Hong Kong impressed CI with its professionalism, expertise in hosting large conferences, and because of the Consumer Council’s 30-year history of promoting consumer rights.

“Holding the event will be significant for the 1.3 billion consumers in China,” said Lau.
