HONG KONG The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has launched its first independent MICE section for event organisers.

Branded as Meetings and Exhibitions Hong Kong (MEHK), the new body is a response to the government’s additional injection of US$19 million over the next five years to promote the convention and exhibition industry in Hong Kong.

Anthony Lau, executive director of HKTB, said: “MEHK will focus its marketing efforts on high-growth and highpotential markets.

“For instance, India and China have been identified as high-potential MICE markets for the meetings and incentive travel segments.”

Lau said the MEHK office will also establish an alliance with Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) and will develop dual-destination itineraries.

MEHK plans to leverage on the development of mainland China and to ride on the Cathay
Pacific/Dragonair merger to develop programmes that include Hong Kong and the mainland.

The new body will also aim to enhance service and product offerings for meeting and incentive organisers, and to identify and develop unique venues, such as museums, for corporate hospitality.

A global series of MEHK launch events are planned, beginning with a launch ceremony in Hong Kong on November 13 at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre.
