KUALA LUMPUR Malaysia is to launch the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MYCEB), its long-awaited national convention body.

The bureau will replace the conventions division of Tourism Malaysia and its primary objective
will be to attract more regional and international conventions and exhibitions to Malaysia.

“MYCEB will function as Malaysia’s one-stop centre for MICE activities, operating as the country’s official destination marketing organisation in relation to business events,”

said Rosly Selamat, the newly appointed director of MYCEB.

“Its focus is to introduce buyers to Malaysian products and services, and securing future
MICE business through MYCEB and its partners.

“The government intends to make Malaysia a ‘top-of-mind’ MICE destination in this region
and to encourage more active participation from local Malaysian associations through their bids
to be the ‘host’ association for international conventions and congresses,” said Rosly.

The initial private sector response to the MYCEB launch has been positive.
Karen Soo of MEP Meeting and Exhibition Planners said:
“We hope MYCEB will identify key mature event agencies to support their initiatives for
international and regional associations and conferences held in Malaysia.”

MYCEB will also provide support and incentives to local associations when bidding.

Rosly added: “Malaysia has 2,000 registered associations and societies. However only 75 of
these are active, so we are going to reignite these different aspects of the Malaysian MICE market to help attract business events.”

The bureau will initially be funded by the Malaysian government and is currently awaiting funding approval from the Cabinet.
