LONDON - It's almost time to open the first door on your advent calender, and most of the UK's major retailers have released their Christmas TV ads.

On balance, they are all crap except the McDonalds one, which is very funny, and perhaps Tescos, which is mildly amusing. Waitrose has the best production, but the ad makes me want to slit my wrists.

Morrison's ad is terrible. But shamefully, I quite like the cheesy ones - Sainsburys and M&S in particular. They make me cringe but surely OTT cringeworthy ads are what Christmas is all about. John Lewis and Waitrose ads are nice, wistful, beautifully shot... but... a bit boring.

Only two ads mean Christmas is here. Coca Cola's Holidays Are Coming \(get rid of that creepy paedo Santa one), and Toys R US. When you see those you know Christmas is just around the corner.

In the U.S, Palm centro gave Santa a slimmed down new look that raised some eyebrows. Their ads are on YouTube at www.youtube.com/user/SantasGoneCentro
