IAB highlights cookies issue with creation of chief privacy officer role

by Jennifer Whitehead, Brand Republic 16-Jan-06

LONDON - IAB Europe has responded to growing concerns about data protection and attempts to restrict the use of cookies by creating the position of chief privacy officer, appointing Yell.com's Barbara Newman to the role.

Newman will continue in her role as head of communication and brand development at Yell.com, at the same time as her work for the IAB.

She will look at how the industry can balance the need to protect identity and maintaining current freedoms of internet publishing technologies.

The appointment comes as the European Commission reviews the directive on data protection in electronic communications. This is the directive that governs the use of software tools such as cookies, which the IAB Europe argues are fundamental in providing customised information for internet users.

IAB Europe plans to contribute to the ongoing consultation and make sure European regulators are up to speed with the latest developments and attempt to demonstrate the self-regulation is effective.

Layla Pavone, president of IAB Europe, said: "There is a popular misconception that the use of cookies is bad practice. In fact, cookies are a fundamental asset, providing customised, profiled information and enabling services for the internet user.

"Barbara Newman's high level of experience in this field, combined with IAB Europe's profile within the industry will ensure that these misconceptions are soon challenged."
