McCann accused of copying Heinz sliced bottle ad
by Staff, Campaign 25-Oct-07, 08:30
LONDON - Advertising blogs have been ablaze this week with discussion around McCann Erickson’s Campaign Poster gold-winning “sliced bottle” execution for Heinz and a similar ad for the Turkish ketchup brand Tat, created by DDB Istanbul.
A spokesman for DDB Istanbul confirmed that its ad was created in 2004, ran locally and was entered for the New York Festivals awards as well as domestic awards schemes. The McCann
executive creative directors, Brian Fraser and Simon Learman, vehemently deny ever having seen the Turkish campaign.

Two weeks ago, similar accusations were levelled at Fallon for its "play-doh" commercial for Sony Bravia. The ad was accused of plagiarising the work of the US artists kozyndan.

Delicious! And I don't just mean the name.

The likelihood of McCann's having seen it - unless it appears in one of the 'books' is slim. The most likely explanation - as in most cases of advertising 'plagiarism' - is that it's a fairly obvious idea for the category.
