Mirror.co.uk to add Dogpile search offer

Due to be introduced in mid-September, the co-branded service will offer the tabloid's online users a web-wide search, rather than just the internal search currently available.

The newspaper site will build a search section (www.mirrorsearch.co.uk) specifically for the Dogpile metasearch engine (www.dogpile.co.uk).

Melanie Riley, business development manager for business enterprises at Mirror Group Newspapers, said: "This will be the first tailored search engine branded as The Mirror. We've been looking at a number of services to add to the site to generate greater usage."

According to Alex Hurd, director of wireline and merchant services at Infospace, Dogpile's parent, the Mirror deal is part of a wider strategy for Dogpile's UK arm. It wants to broaden its reach to include more search engines. Hurd added: "We are looking to put more emphasis on Dogpile at the moment as one of our lead products."

As part of the move to improve the Dogpile service in the UK, the company has signed Fast Search & Transfer and online encyclopaedia About (www.about.com), which runs a network of guides for web users, as search partners.

Dogpile hunts search engines to compile a list of matches to queries.

It organises the results by each individual resource.

Other search engines used to compile searches through Dogpile include Overture, Espotting.com and Ask Jeeves.
