Flickr creates Garden: makes open source digestible

LONDON - Flickr has launched an app store to help users find additional tools to enhance their photography, including making calendars and creating presentations.

Named The App Garden, it replaces the services section, giving apps and their developers more prominence.

Each app has its own information page, where users can add descriptive tags, share comments and add as a favourite listing. As more users favourite an app it is given more prominence and moves higher up the listings.

Flickr was ahead of the curve when it opened its API to third party developers in 2004, a trend which has since caught on with next-generation social sites.

In September Flickr launched an official iPhone app to make the process of uploading, browsing and tagging images from a the mobile device simpler. The Yahoo! owned site also created an official Twitter tool in July, which lets users upload existing Flickr content directly into their Twitter stream, using a short Flic.kr url.
