LONDON - The UK's business media industry increased its revenues by 47% from 2004 to £23bn in 2006, according to a report commissioned by the PPA.

The industry generated £15.6bn in 2004 and is now almost triple its 1998 size of £8.1bn.

The sector was hailed by Tim Weller, the PPA business media council chairman and chief executive of Incisive Media, as "the envy of our British media peers".

Weller highlighted B2B publishers' ability to develop profitable online strategies and exploit the international market, and said he believed an important future growth segment would be data publishing.

The lion's share of the £23bn was generated by print, which grew 8% in real terms from 2004 to £8.9bn.

Online grew by 44% in real terms to £2.8bn, equalling the revenues generated by face-to-face events, which grew 7% in real terms.

Marketing services was bigger than online and events, with revenues of £3.3bn.

The £23bn total included £4bn of non-specific revenues reported by B2B companies.

Other smaller sectors include data publishing, with £485m, broadcasting, with £289m, and market research, with £275m.

The report was produced by GfK NOP, compiled and edited by Peter Dear, and endorsed by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.
