This Is What I Do Adam Mills, Admedia

What is your job title? Managing director.

What does your job involve?
I have to make sure that the money coming in is greater than the money going out, and I manage all facets of the business to make this happen. Due to the current climate, a large proportion of my job involves looking at the effectiveness of our sales effort. And since I am relatively new to a company that has experienced its fair share of change, people are another priority.

What's it like working for Admedia?
I am the new boy with lots to learn, so it has been long days and hard work. But we have some nice people and a great product, so I'm starting to have fun. It's also a real pleasure watching a new management team become more ambitious every day.

What qualifications and experience do you need?
The biggest requirements are believing in the product we sell and understanding its potential, knowing how to motivate people and having a good understanding of the communications planning process.

How do you spend a typical day?
After three presses of my snooze button, a walk along a dark common and being shouted at by a spinning instructor, I spend the rest of the day juggling selling, marketing, finance, operations and HR. I could be working on anything from setting new sales targets to approving a marketing brochure. I also regularly get out to see clients and fit in nice lunches with them somewhere in the middle of the day.

What's the best thing about your job?
The ever-increasing enthusiasm and team spirit at Admedia.

And the worst?
Sacrificing a proper breakfast for a fruit salad to keep room for lunch - and then finding out mid-morning that my lunch has been cancelled.

What keeps you awake at night?
Nothing - I am a great sleeper as long as I have written my to-do list.

Who helped you get where you are today?
My Dad, with his consistent encouragement and wise views of the world.

Who do you aspire to be like?
Anyone who has the balls to go out and do something on their own.
