Desert Island Brands - Crispin Reed

Brand Republic 28-Mar-06, 08:00

A chance to pick five brands that you would like to find washed up on the beach if you were a castaway. What would you choose and why? Design consultancy Pemberton & Whitefoord asks Crispin Reed, senior vice-president Europe for Sterling Brands, a leading independently owned branding consultancy with offices in London, New York, and San Francisco.

1. Survival essential
Making a shelter, finding food and attempting to escape are going to be high on your agenda -- so which brand will you find most useful in your attempt to tame the great outdoors?

On the basis that the ability to signal one's whereabouts is top of the survival tips, my Sony Ericsson mobile phone. It has a rather nifty light that has a pre-programmed SOS option!

2. Last taste of civilisation
The island has a plentiful supply of nuts and fruit, not to mention a healthy population of fish, so you will have plenty to eat. But which one food brand are you really going to miss from your old life?
PG Tips. Good old honest cuppa...both refreshing and comforting.

3. Best reminder of home
Successful survivalists always claim that it is mental attitude which sees them through. Belief that you will get back home is going to be vital -- so which brand will sum up home best?
Kodak, as this best represents my personal photography collection containing priceless memories of family, friends and global travels.

4. Most welcome online brand
Eventually you manage to rig up your own connection to the internet using bits and pieces found on the beach but you have only one chance to log on to a website before it goes down -- which online brand will you choose?
www.fantasypremierleague.com - I'd need to check how my fantasy team is faring against my mates in the Dog & Duck league.

5. Ultimate luxury
Self indulgence is hard to come by on a desert island, so what brand would you be most excited to find washed up on the beach?
Ormonde Man, an exquisite fragrance by Ormonde Jayne... after all life on the island may be getting a bit 'aromatic'!

6. Transferable skills
You already work in the jungle of marketing so there are probably skills which you have acquired through your job which will come in handy -- or you may have other hidden talents. Which of your personal skills will help you to get to grips with life on a desert island?
Our company has been described as a place where brilliant strategic
thinking meets breathtaking creativity and innovation! And so I guess being creative and innovative must be in my skill set. However, I have always been impressed by the saying, "If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs", and if I were to choose one skill that would certainly help on the island it would be my ability to keep calm.

Designer and desert island survival expert Adrian Whitefoord comments:
Crispin will have to be a little careful when giving signals from the island with his phone. A captured Spanish sloop is currently at anchor off the coast, manned by a crew of cut-throat buccaneers obsessed by the prospect of buried treasure. They have been waiting for three weeks for the signal from their boarding party (3 x 3 waves of a lighted torch). Unfortunately, the away team's foraging trip was cut short - the witch doctor had them all for tea (literally).

Kodak is a brand which, to many (including myself) instils a sense of trust and affection. My first camera was a Kodak Instamatic which I loved. Its products are good value, easy to use and reliable, but please don't use the anti red eye flash until the pirates' sloop has departed.

I am not really a footie fan but I did get hooked on fantasy football for a while. The trouble is you have to keep on top of things all the time. Initially, my carefully selected team did quite well, but after two months neglect (with no transfers) my side consisted almost entirely of: suspended, out of form or injured players. I would recommend that Crispin switches his allegiance to the most popular sport on the island - blowpipe darts. As a general rule, best to play this before partaking of the witch doctor's fermented coconut brew, otherwise puncture wounds tend to become commonplace.

Ah! PG tips, now we're talking. I'm a great fan of the innovative pyramid tea bag but miss the old TV advertising terribly - we still call this "chimp tea" in our house. Good news for Crispin though, as a PG Tips fan he will be an instant hit with the island's chimp fraternity who see their advertising star cousins as no less famous than Michael Jackson. The fame rubs off on anybody that drinks the stuff so Crispin can look forward to becoming an instant celebrity amongst the island's higher primates.

Not being familiar with Ormonde Man I looked it up on the internet. I now understand it to have "a base note of musk" I have no desire to overstress the hazards of the island or to paint a dark picture but Crispin's "ability to keep calm" will be put to the test when "Old Scar face" the musk ox gets a whiff of the fragrance and thinks a rival is invading his territory - I hear the sloop is looking for new recruits!
