The sudden rise in numbers during the first three months of 2005 was unveiled by media regulator Ofcom today, indicating that the popularity of Freeview services box has more than matched the expectations of its backers, including the BBC.
The number of Freeview-only homes in the UK increased by around 466,000 during the first three months of 2005, pushing the overall total getting their fix of free-to-air digital services to almost 5.1 million homes by the end of March this year.
The total number of free-to-air homes in the UK, which include Solus card viewers and former-Sky customers using old equipment, has now reached 5.5 million.
With the inclusion of BSkyB and other digital and cable customers, the number of homes with digital television has reached almost 62%, an increase of 2.5% since December 2004.
Ofcom has also estimated that around 25% of Freeview set-top boxes are situated in home that already either an existing BSkyB, cable or digital system installed, or a second Freeview box.
