The Guardian raises its cover price to 80p

LONDON - The Guardian newspaper has permanently increased its cover price to 80p for its daily edition and pushed the Saturday price to £1.50, following similar increases by rivals including The Times and The Daily Telegraph.

The price of the daily and Saturday editions of The Guardian have been upped by 10p. The daily went up today and the Saturday edition will rise this weekend.

However, Guardian Newspapers said there are no plans to increase the cover price of its Sunday title The Observer, which retails at £1.80.

The Times increased its cover price from 65p to 70p last Monday, coinciding with its sister News International title The Sun dropping its cover price from 35p to 20p for an undisclosed period of time.

The Daily Telegraph and The Independent cost 70p. The Telegraph's Saturday edition was increased to £1.50 last weekend, which was an increase of 10p.

The Financial Times remains the most expensive quality daily at £1.30. The Pearson-owned title posted yet another circulation increase during August, according to the latest ABC figures. Circulation rose 0.09% to 426,830 copies and its six-month average was up by 1.09% to 444,644.

Circulation at The Guardian fell 1.81% during August to 355,750 copies. Its six-month average is down by 2.9% year on year to 364,330.
