Sky relaxes rules over programming

by Media Week Media Week 15-Jan-08

Sky has watered down new rules concerning the number of hours of original programming that channels on its platform must air.

Under new rules, channels listed on its electronic programme guide (EPG) must air at least 12 hours of original content in each seven-day period.

However, shopping channels will not initially be required to match this threshold.

Instead, the number of hours of original content that these channels must air will increase from three to six from 1 July.

Sky believes there is still a case for linear channels to air more than 12 hours of so-called "non-repeating" programming per week.

An additional supplement to the EPG listings rules, specifically focusing on high-definition television, is planned for future publication.
