Guardian regains top newspaper website slot

The Guardian added almost 2.2 million unique users in June to register an ABCe of 20.5 million (8.5 million in the UK), while Mail Online lost 14.4% of its unique users to fall back to 16.1 million in June, behind both the Telegraph and Times Online.

Emily Bell, director of digital content at Guardian News & Media, said: "Our success is down to outstanding quality journalism and a concerted effort from behind the scenes."

The Telegraph website, which has been gradually revamping itself this month, added 6.6% to reach 19.7 million unique users for June, (6.5 million in the UK). Mike Moore, general manager of digital at TMG, said the company was excited about its redesigned website, "which will offer many new opportunities in the months ahead".

Times Online claimed third spot with 16.4 million, an addition of 3.1%, and a UK-only figure of 5.7 million. Both represented the highest ABCes posted by Times Online since it began publsihing its figures.

The Independent added 10.4% to climb to 7.2 million, but that still leaves the website as the least popular of the UK qualities in the ABCe ratings.

Year on year, the Telegraph website managed to achieve the biggest increase, up 179.5% compared to June 2007.
