Vodka firm issues writ against Absolute

LONDON - The owner of Absolut Vodka has launched legal proceedings against Absolute radio, alleging infringement of its trademark.

Vodka firm issues writ against Absolute

Last month, Times of India-backed TIML Golden Square rebranded Virgin Radio as Absolute radio. The move followed its decision not to license the Virgin brand from Virgin Group when it acquired the station from SMG Group earlier this year.

Drinks company V&S Vin&Sprit, which owns Absolut vodka, has issued a writ against Absolute radio for trademark infringement.

The firm claims consumers could be confused over the use of the similar names and that Absolute radio could be detrimental to its vodka brand.

An Absolute radio spokeswoman said: "We absolutely believe that the two brands can exist alongside each other and that our five million listeners can distinguish between a vodka brand and a radio station.

"We hope for a swift resolution to this situation and remain 100% committed to our exciting plans for Absolute radio."

I'm surprised it took them this long. What were they thinking? They may as well have called Bacardi.
