Actor Paul Kaye has had a gagging order put on him by the retailer after his comments appeared in The Guardian's Guide on the same weekend the ads broke.
Kaye, best known for his Dennis Pennis character, was asked whether the words 'sell out' meant anything to him. He said: "I've just done an ad for Woolies. What a c***. I'll have to hide from the telly for six months."
The campaign broke in Scotland at the weekend and airs next week in London.
Woolworths' head of corporate affairs Nicole Lander said: "We got in touch with (Kaye's) agent and were assured Paul was misunderstood and that such a misunderstanding won't happen again". Kaye's contract is not affected by the comments.
In similar incidents, Yardley 'face' Helena Bonham Carter said she didn't wear make-up and Griff Rhys Jones made derogatory comments about the Holsten Pils brand.
