LONDON - BBC.co.uk scooped three coveted Webby Awards at the 8th Annual Webby Awards in San Francisco this week for Education, News and Sport.

BBC.co.uk/humanbody won in the Education category, BBC.co.uk/news won in the News category and BBC.co.uk/sport won in the Sport category.

BBC News took the news award for a second time, the only news organisation ever to do so.

The Webbys are the most prestigious internet awards in the US and are dubbed the "Oscars" of the web.

Ashley Highfield, BBC director of new media and technology, said: "This is fantastic recognition from the international internet industry of the quality and creativity of BBC.co.uk. These awards acknowledge the innovative way that we can use new media to fulfil the traditional BBC public service role to inform, educate and entertain our audiences."
