Industry gets behind recycling promotion

The DMA is lending its support to a new 18-month recycling awareness scheme called 'the BIG recycle'.

The initiative was launched last month by celebrity impersonator, Alistair McGowen, and promotes all forms of recycling. He kick-started a week of local recycling events around the country, which will be followed by an 18 month Government-funded national TV campaign.

The scheme is also being supported by British Glass, Chorus and PaperChain and has been developed by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP).

David Robottom, the DMA's director of postal affairs and industry development, said the DMA's support proved the industry is taking its responsibilities seriously. "This is very much part of our 2003 agreement with DEFRA to increase recycling," he said.

So far the DMA has contributed £5,000 to the communications project, and is seeking to be involved in future events.

One of the first initiatives the DMA will be running is its Environmental Forum on December 14, supported by the Woodland Trust and the British Printing Industry Federation.
