NEW YORK - Google has launched new software to make it easier to organise pictures, using the picture site it bought last year, Picasa.com.

The new version offers tools for photographers at all levels, and makes it simpler for people to organise, edit and share their digital pictures.

New features of Picasa include 12 photographic filter effects, cropping and straightening, red-eye reduction and colour and lighting adjustments. Also, it will be easier to add captions and search, and the archive feature allows people to create gift CDs with personalised slideshows.

Lars Perkins, general manager of Picasa, said: "Digital photos are an important and growing category of personal information, and Picasa is in line with Google's commitment to develop advanced technologies that further help users to find, organise and share information that's important to them."
