Mock election to poll 7m people ahead of General Election

LONDON - A mock election polling website launched by email to 7m consumers today may give the first taste of the nation's mood around this May's General Election.

OneBigVote.co.uk invites consumers to place their likely General Election 2005 vote and aims to be the UK's largest and most definitive mock election result, with the results available on April 4.

OneBigVote is emailed to the consumer database owned by marketing company Interactive Prospect Targeting, its developers, as the latest tool for data capture and consumer research. The company hopes the site will spread virally and increase participant numbers beyond its current database.

The project follows research by Internet Market Research Services in March, which shows one in 10 people will not be taking part in the election because they can not be bothered, and almost half, 46% of those who are not voting, would be more likely to if they could vote online -- and of those who said they will vote, one in four will not if it is not convenient on the day.

Ivan Southall, spokesperson for OneBigVote.co.uk, said: "A national event such as the General Election presented an ideal opportunity for us to exploit our consumer targeting capabilities for research purposes.

"With a database of 7m, we should be able to compile the UK's largest pre-election poll, which will include results by marginal seats. We also anticipate that the website will generate viral activity, which will increase the participant numbers beyond our base."
