Retail News: 'Fast fashion' in 11% sales surge

Marketing 20-Apr-05, 15:34

Sales of 'fast-fashion' clothing sold by stores such as Topshop, H&M and Zara have jumped by 11% in the past six months.

The 'fast-fashion' market - high-street clothes that replicate current celebrity or catwalk styles - rose to £1bn in the 24 weeks to 6 March, according to TNS FashionTrak.

The sector's growth was far faster than that of the overall retail clothing market, which rose 2% to £14.9bn over the same period.

While nearly one-third of all clothing and footwear is sold at a markdown price, fast fashion generally sells at full price. Only 19% of fast fashion is being discounted.

Women's clothing makes up 77% of fast-fashion sales, with men's clothes accounting for the remainder.

The category also includes sales from Mango, New Look, Miss Selfridge and Primark, as well as supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda.
