Daily Mail leads on unofficial figure of 52 dead

LONDON - The Daily Mail is running the dramatic shot of the bombed bus in Tavistock Square for its front page with the headline, 'London July 7 2005 -- 52 dead, 700 injured in England's worst ever terrorist outrage'.

According to official reports, only 37 have been confirmed dead, although 17 people are believed to have died or are critically ill in hospital from the number 30 bus blast.

The Daily Mail goes on to show the walking wounded on pages two and three with no editorial. Pages four and five are dedicated to Underground maps and times of the attack, with a headline and story vowing to "hunt down these evil killers."

On pages six and seven, political correspondent Graeme Wilson discusses former Labour MP George Galloway's claim, made in Parliament yesterday, that the capital has "paid the price" of war in Iraq.

Former Evening Standard editor and military historian Sir Max Hastings has contributed a poignant comment piece, starting with the line: "We knew it was coming."

Later he writes: "It's time to tilt the balance of justice in favour of the law abiding and away from those who choose to live here while proclaiming their hatred oy everything that Britain represents."

In total, the Daily Mail is devoting 23 pages to the atrocity and running 27 pictures from the day's happenings.
