The Economist appoints first global marketing director

LONDON – The Economist has appointed Susan Clark as its first global marketing director to develop the brand through advertising and PR.

In addition, Clark will oversee Economist.com, Intelligent Life and World In magazine, as well as being responsible for circulation marketing in Europe, Middle East and Africa.


Clark joins from Le Meridien Hotels & Resorts, where she was senior vice-president of marketing and sales from 2001 to 2004.

Previously, she worked at New York-based marketing consultancy The Phineus Company, where she specialised in product design, positioning and segmentation.


Yale-graduate Clark also spent 15 years with American Express in a range of marketing and product development roles after beginning her career with computer magazine publisher Ziff-Davis Publishing.


Clark will be based out of The Economist's London offices and travel between the US, Asia and Europe.


Andrew Rashbass, The Economist publisher, said: "She will become a key member of the senior team who will implement our aggressive growth strategy."


The Economist, which is 50% owned by Financial Times publisher Pearson, achieved a circulation of more than 1m last year.
