DIARY: Euro RSCG Peugeot ad refused airplay at Top Gear award ceremony

Campaign 08-Feb-02, 12:00

Good to see the illustrious Top Gear awards introduce a favourite

car ad category this year.

Those taking a walk to the spotlit podium were Skoda with its new

campaign from Fallon, Volkswagen for BMP DDB's surreal Lupo spot, Land

Rover from Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/ Y&R and BMW's Mini through

WCRS.

A hearty slap on the back all round to the agencies involved.

Unfortunately, one agency that did not fare so well is Euro RSCG Wnek

Gosper, whose Peugeot 307 spot won the dubious accolade of least

favourite ad.

It appears that the judging panel was too manly to admit its secret

appreciation for the sentimental spots. To add insult to injury, Top

Gear refused to show it, opting instead to show a clip from an 80s

archive of someone playing the song used in the commercial, Something

inside so strong, on a keyboard.

And matters were made worse when, after showing the Skoda ad, the

presenters commented that they had passed the details of the agency

responsible, Fallon, on to Peugeot. Yikes.

Still, it's unlikely the £13 million Peugeot account will be

quaking in its boots at the threat from a £2 million challenger.
