Virgin plans Xtreme debut

With V festival approaching this weekend, Virgin Radio has announced the launch of a digital radio station, Virgin Radio Xtreme, designed to tap into that same young audience.

Launching on 5 September, Virgin Radio Xtreme will be a youth rock station available on Sky Digital, DAB digital radio and on the internet.

The station will feature the likes of indie rock favourites Razorlight, The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs and Green Day.

Paul Jackson, acting chief executive of Virgin Radio, said: "We are now reaching out to new younger listeners who have been poorly served by the pop-led stations across the country."

Virgin is trying to expand its digital network and already broadcasts digital stations Virgin Radio Classic Rock and Groove. The latest Rajar figures show Classic Rock with 127,000 listeners and Groove with 74,000.

Jackson added: "We would expect Xtreme to do something comparable."
