Interactive TV an Olympic hit

by MediaWeek, Media Week 24-Aug-04, 08:00

The BBC’S interactive Olympic coverage is proving popular with armchair fans with initial figures showing more than 6 million viewers opting to press "the red button".

6.13 million viewers chose the service, which allows an extra 4 sports to be watched, between the Opening Ceremony and 18 August.

BBC Sport’s Andrew Thompson, Head of New Media, Sports News and Development, said: "The Olympics are perfect for interactive television because there are so many events happening at the same time.

"Before we had interactive option, hundreds of hours of footage disappeared down a black hole. But now with interactive television they can enjoy the Games wherever and however they want."

Viewers with digital satellite or cable television have four extra sports to choose from while viewers with Freeview boxes have two.
