LONDON - Peugeot has become the second company to sign up as a main sponsor of the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France.

The car manufacturer follows French banking group Societe Generale in signing a deal with the International Rugby Board, believed to be worth about £3.5m.

Peugeot, which also sponsored the Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2003, will receive category exclusivity for automotive.

The IRB is seeking six top-line sponsors for the tournament, which is expected to bring in a minimum of £60m from the sale of sponsorship and TV rights.

Visa, France Telecom, energy group EDF and GMF Insurance are rumoured to be filling the four remaining slots, although these agreements have yet to be finalised.

Although the tournament is being hosted by France, some games will take place in the UK due to a long-term agreement between the French Rugby Federation and its Irish, Scottish and Welsh counterparts.
