Shelter names new chair

Homelessness and housing charity Shelter has announced Rodney Schwartz will be the new chair of its board of trustees.

Schwartz has more than 25 years experience in the finance and venture capital sector, most recently working with Catalyst, Lehman Brothers and Paribas. He also serves on the boards of AXA Investment Management and the UK Social Investment Forum, and is chair of Justgiving.com.

Shelter said his appointment showed the charity's desire to keep pace with increasing demand and help ensure that its structures meet its clients needs over the next decade. Initially, Schwartz will assist in sourcing new funding streams to support Shelter's expanding services for children.

"My interest in homelessness stems from the experience of my family and from recent work with Gordon Roddick and the Big Issue in the social venture capital arena," Schwartz said.

He pledged to work closely with director Adam Sampson and the board to build on Shelter's recent achievements, and to help the organisation develop in a way that will best address Britain's housing problems.

Sampson said: "In an ever-evolving political and financial environment, it is critical that charities do not simply remain static but constantly seek to refine the way they organise themselves to ensure they are giving best value on behalf of their clients.

"With his long experience in business and finance, Rod will bring a set of skills which will be invaluable in helping us to achieve that. And his obvious commitment to social justice and the needs of the homeless and badly housed people will also be vital in ensuring Shelter stays true to our mission."
