OFT approves Johnston Press acquisition of Scotsman

LONDON - The Office of Fair Trading has decided not to refer Johnston Press's December 2005 acquisition of Scotsman Publications to the Competition Commission.

Johnston Press struck a £160m deal to buy Scotsman Publications last December from the Barclay brothers, who bought them for £87m in 1995.

Scotsman Publications, which publishes The Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday and the Edinburgh Evening News, first attracted the attention of Johnston Press after its September 2005 £159m acquisition of Irish newspaper group, Local Press Limited.

A full report on Johnston Press' acquisition will be available on the OFT website, oft.gov.uk, and in the Office's Weekly Gazette shortly.

The OFT said that under the provisions of the Enterprise Act 2002, there was "no information currently available" to warrant an investigation into the deal between Johnston Press and Scotsman Publications from the Competition Commission.
