BSkyB and BT favourites in race to snap up AOL

LONDON – BSkyB and BT are the favourites in the race to buy Time Warner's AOL UK internet business, which has a price tag of £1bn.

The satellite television group and telecoms firm join the likes of the Carphone Warehouse, which is also interested in snapping up AOL UK.

AOL was put up for sale two weeks ago after Time Warner appointed Citigroup to evaluate the strategic options for its AOL UK arm.

However, it is believed that the price tag of £1bn is unlikely to be reached, with bidders seeing it as too high for AOL, which has 2.2m customers

BSkyB, which is also reported to be interested in broadband entertainment service HomeChoice, would be able to combine AOL with its Easynet internet business that it bought for £211m in October.
