Desert Island Brands - Nick Adams

A chance to pick five brands that you would like to find washed up on the beach if you were a castaway. What would you choose and why? Design consultancy Pemberton & Whitefoord asks Nick Adams, managing director of Sense.

1. Survival essential
Making a shelter, finding food and attempting to escape are going to be high on your agenda -- so which brand will you find most useful in your attempt to tame the great outdoors?

...and all in the burning tropical mid day sun, it would have to be my ever reliable Oakley's (of course the new Motorola RazerWire bluetooth pair -- friends and family will want up to the minute info on survival successes).

2. Last taste of civilisation
The island has a plentiful supply of nuts and fruit, not to mention a healthy population of fish, so you will have plenty to eat. But which one food brand are you really going to miss from your old life?
...but no meat? Therefore it would most certainly be Spam, the Great British staple comeback!

3. Best reminder of home
Successful survivalists always claim that it is mental attitude which sees them through. Belief that you will get back home is going to be vital -- so which brand will sum up home best?
....definitely the Nouvelle. Perfect for not compromising the natural beauty of the island (and for moments when the self belief waivers).

4. Most welcome online brand
Eventually you manage to rig up your own connection to the internet using bits and pieces found on the beach but you have only one chance to log on to a website before it goes down -- which online brand will you choose?
Easyjet -- they most surely would be just about to launch a scheduled service to my island (well, a neighbouring island a short bus journey away).

5. Ultimate luxury
Self indulgence is hard to come by on a desert island, so what brand would you be most excited to find washed up on the beach?
A spanking new Porsche Cayman S (with sat nav. option naturally).

6. Transferable skills
You already work in the jungle of marketing so there are probably skills which you have acquired through your job which will come in handy -- or you may have other hidden talents. Which of your personal skills will help you to get to grips with life on a desert island?
My creative capabilities would come to the fore (to design the most effective escape craft) coupled with strategic and planning skills to ensure I left heading in the right direction and on time!

Designer and desert island survival expert Adrian Whitefoord comments:
Blimey! A hi-tech castaway! This is a man that obviously wants to look the biz even though there's only the occasional monkey and a whole tribe of bemused islanders to witness the sartorial eyewear. But this is a seriously good idea though Nick and so it gets top marks from the survival jury here at P&W. Oakley optics with Motorola Bluetooth technology. Razorwire lets you take advantage of the best shades technology on earth while enjoying the freedom to fight off giant crabs, swat mosquitoes and build a camp fire, all while having a chat with the loved ones back home thanks to the hands-free link to your cellular. This makes a very refreshing change to the so often mentioned Swiss Army Knife.

Spam! Yes spam is cool too. I mean how many luncheon meats have their own web sites? You can even get caps, hats and T shirts (plus boxer shorts on the American site) -- you name it and spam does it. From wartime delicacy to the luxury food choice of castaways this American icon, which is now thought of as truly British, has done the lot. And the UK site, which not surprisingly offers a little more irony than its US partner, has a fantastic screen saver of flying spam cans which I have now downloaded. Spam Rigatoni from the recipe section sounds good Nick though you might have to modify some of the recipes a bit -- perhaps invent a few that feature coconut and sand?

Nick has lost me now -- are you referring to Nouvelle Vague the French music collective who have great tracks on their albums resurrected from the 80's new wave era like the Dead Kennedy's 'Too Drunk to F**k' all set to cheeky bossanova rhythms? If so, this will go down a storm with the locals, and I like it too. But if this is the only music you are taking with you then it might drive you bonkers after a few months and become the biggest incentive to get off the island. But, I have a sneaking suspicion that Nick might be referring to something else here. Give us a clue Nick. Is it a film? A book?

Easyjet. Sorry but they are a million miles away from even considering your island Nick. A far cry from the Balearics this one really has got hostile natives, things that bite and sting and no duty free. Nice try though.

Now a Porsche Cayman might not take too kindly to the sandy beaches, virgin jungle and the total lack of black top on the island. But a 4x4 Cayenne would be a good choice though. Anybody see the race between the skydiving squaddy and 'Hamster' Hammond on Top Gear recently? My goodness those things can move and they certainly don't need tarmac to do it on either. So, a Cayenne it is then Nick. Big enough to sleep in, excellent air con, it's got the lot.

Well you have lucked out totally Nick as recent castaway Richard Seymour -- one of the world's leading product designers -- is probably still slaving away on his escape vehicle as we speak. Make friends with him, share the old creative insights, and he might let you team up for a mass breakout. How does that sound?
