Independent and Observer record readership boosts

LONDON - All national dailies have seen a decline in readership over the past six months, with the exception of The Independent, according to the latest figures from the National Readership Survey.

Between January and June of this year, The Independent managed to boost its readership by 19% from 647,000 to 769,000 readers, according to the figures, recording the only gain.


The Daily Star recorded the largest drop over the six-month period, down by 18% from 1,820,000 to 1,498,000. The Daily Mirror fell by 14% from 4,234,000 to 3,651,000 and The Daily Express dropped 14% from 2,038,000 to 1,760,000 readers.

The Sun fell by 2% from 7,940,000 readers to 7,806,000, as did The Times, which was down the same percentage from 1,821,000 to 1,781,000. There was worse news for The Daily Telegraph -- it was down 11% to 2,002,000 from 2,254,000.


The Guardian fell 5% from 1,238,000 to 1,171,000. There was better news for Sunday sister title The Observer, which recorded a readership hike from 1,281,000 readers to 1,471,000, up 15% during the first six months of the year.


The only other performer in the sector was regional paper Scotland on Sunday, which was up by 12% from 320,00 readers to 358,000.
 
Underperformers included the Daily Star on Sunday, down 14% from 1,063,000 to 913,000, and the Sunday Telegraph, down 12% from 2,134,000 to 1,867,000..


The Independent on Sunday failed to do as well as its daily sister title, dropping 2% to 762,000 from 777,000.
 
The Sunday Mirror dropped from 4,609,000 to 4,123,000 readers, while the Sunday Express fell from a 2,225,000 readership to 1,980,000, each recording an 11% drop.
