Microsoft launches 3-D map ad service

by Media Week, Media Week 14-Nov-06

Microsoft has developed a mapping service with 3-D capability, which allows advertisers to place virtual posters within the image.

Users visiting http://local.live.com type a query into the search bar
and click on the "maps" tab, and images of their chosen location appear
either in two or 3-D.

The 3-D models have been created for 15 US cities, as well as Nelson's

Column, the Tower of London and the London Eye in the UK.

Advertisements will be available within these areas, similar to
billboards on the side of roads. The ads within Virtual Earth 3-D are
created using a combination of technologies from Virtual Earth, Massive
Inc. technology, and the advertising platform from Microsoft Digital
Advertising Solutions.

Other features provided include real-time traffic information in the US,
access to business listings and people listings.
