Jonesco to head AOL UK

AOL has appointed Andy Jonesco, previously senior vice-president of audience for AOL UK, to the newly created position of UK managing director.

At the same time, he has become head of pan-European sales and interactive marketing commercial alliances for AOL Europe. He will report directly to Carlo d'Asaro Biondo, president of AOL Europe.
Country chief executive Karen Thomson, who was also European president, ran the UK operation until earlier this month, when she left without announcing her next move.

Jonesco has been with AOL UK for five years and was previously managing director of Express Newspapers. He joined the company to oversee the interactive marketing team and was subsequently promoted to head of the audience business unit, with responsibility for AOL's online content, paid services and advertising activities in the UK.

The broadband access arm of AOL UK was sold to Carphone Warehouse last month for £370m. The remaining portal business is still owned by AOL, and Jonesco will now restructure the firm to reflect this. The company has informed the Department of Trade and Industry that as many as 100 staff could be made redundant.
