BBC set to launch pre-school titles

by Media Week, Media Week 05-Dec-06

BBC Magazines plans to launch a record number of magazines aimed at pre-school children next year to capitalise on a raft of new shows on BBC digital channel, CBeebies.

The publisher has three titles planned for spring 2007, including In The
Night Garden, linked to a new show for babies that the BBC hopes will
become the new Tellytubbies.

The launch, due in March, will be followed a month later by Underground

Ernie, based on the show for three to five year-old boys, starring Gary

Lineker as a tube train driver. Charlie & Lola, a premium-priced title,
will debut in May.

Zoe Aldis, BBC Magazines' circulation marketing manager for youth and
children's titles, said: "The BBC has commissioned more programmes than
ever on CBeebies and is hoping to reach a slightly older audience,
particularly four to six-year-old boys, providing more material to
publish."

BBC Magazines has moved Kerry Murray, the division's group head of
circulation, to associate publisher of pre-school magazines.
