IPC Southbank appoints Russell as group ad director
IPC Southbank has hired Alex Russell, head of press at Media Planning Group, to fill the key role of group ad director.
The role includes several of IPC’s flagship titles, such as monthly fashion magazines Marie Claire and InStyle, women’s lifestyle title Woman & Home, plus a home interest portfolio including Homes & Gardens.

“Successful publishers are operating more and more like agencies,” Russell said. “For their titles to succeed, they need to position themselves more as multi-platform brands. There is huge growth potential in Southbank’s portfolio.”
The appointment is the second time in the past year that IPC has hired a senior press buyer for a commercial role, following the appointment of Ian Tournes, Starcom MediaVest’s former head of press, to the new role of group trading director in June last year.
Russell will head up Southbank’s 70-strong ad team, including its luxury sales team and two centralised teams, and will report to Jackie Newcombe, the division’s managing director.
Her career has included stints at Mediaedge:cia and at Carat, where she ran the Diageo account, before joining Carat International to look after Disney’s media buying.
Russell then joined the Media Planning Group in July 2005 to head its luxury brand accounts and became head of press six months later.
MPG has confirmed that it is looking for a direct replacement for Russell.
