LONDON - Apple TV is coming to the UK and Ireland, allowing iTunes content downloaded from a Mac or PC to be viewed on a domestic widescreen TV set.

The technology giant says that Apple TV will change the way consumers watch digital media. Materials available to view include podcasts, movies, TV shows and music.

The set-top box works with a special Apple remote control, which works within a distance of 30 feet. Apple TV will connect to a television via a HDMI port or component video port. Wireless capability then synchronises files from an iTunes library to the TV, ready to watch.

Apple TV uses a 40GB hard drive, allowing users to store up to 50 hours of video, 9,000 songs, 25,000 photos or a combination of each.

The system is understood to provide access to more than 400 movies, 350 TV shows, more than 4m songs, 5,000 music videos, 100,000 podcasts, and 20,000 audiobooks, from the iTunes Store.

The new units are expected to retail for £199.
