LONDON – Richard Thomas has been reappointed as Information Commissioner until June 2009.

His second term will last until 2009, by which time he will have reached his 60th birthday. He first took the role in November 2002 when he replaced Elizabeth France.
According to Thomas: "There is much to be done. Information rights are increasingly important, with the public seeking more transparency from public bodies while at the same time wanting more personal privacy and respect for their own information. My office seeks to help organisations secure public trust and confidence through high standards of information handling.”
Thomas's job is to police compliance with the growing body of laws that govern what direct marketers can and cannot do with data.
Prior to becoming Information Commissioner, Thomas was director of public policy at law firm Clifford Chance.
