Cadbury in court over salmonella

Marketing 25-Apr-07

Cadbury Schweppes is being prosecuted by Birmingham City Council for breaches of food hygiene regulations following last year's salmonella outbreak.

It has accused Cadbury of bringing unsafe products to market and failing
to immediately inform the authorities of the contamination. It also
claims Cadbury 'failed to identify hazards' and 'identify critical

control points and corrective action'.

Cadbury's 128-year-old factory at Bournville falls under the council's
remit.

The firm discovered the leaking pipe that led to the outbreak at its
plant in Marlbrook, Herefordshire, in January, but did not inform the
authorities until June, when it recalled 1m chocolate bars.

In a statement, Cadbury said: 'We have fully co-operated with the
authorities throughout their enquiries and will examine the charges. It
would be inappropriate for us to comment further.'
