LONDON - The BBC is to launch a spin-off magazine and website from its family history TV programme ‘Who Do You Think You Are?' to coincide with the start of the new series on September 6.

The BBC Who Do You Think You Are? magazine and website have been produced in partnership with production company Wall to Wall Media, which own the rights to the TV series.

The magazine, which goes on sale September 25 priced at £4.25, is written by expert genealogists and historians and will be published 13 times a year.

With an initial print run of 50,000 copies, it will feature content on family and social history, along with expert practical advice, celebrity extras from the TV series and a regular section on local history.

Andy Benham, publishing director, said: "With over six million people tuning in for the last series of 'Who Do You Think You Are?', the world of family history has never been more buoyant.

"This magazine market has huge potential for growth and our new title will help move family history away from being an exclusive dusty hobby, to a contemporary and accessible interest. The market needs to be rejuvenated, and that's what we intend to do."

BBCwhodoyouthinkyouare.com will launch on September 6 and will include new celebrity TV content, details of the latest issue of the magazine, family history tutorials, a guide to getting started, a forum, blogs and podcasts.

The site will also contain a link to the largest family history website in the UK - www.ancestry.co.uk, from which its data will come.

Andrew Davies, online publisher, said: "We're seeing the exciting evolution of specialist magazines with this title. Its fully integrated editorial mix means that digital activity has never been so important, as we look to build a community of enthusiasts who can use both broadcast, print and online resources to fulfil their family history needs.

"The website will aim to be the definitive online family history resource and expand the 'Who Do You Think You Are?' brand into a truly multimedia experience."

The launch of both the magazine and website is being supported by an integrated advertising campaign in BBC Magazines titles, including BBC History Magazine, Homes & Antiques and BBC Wildlife Magazine.
