Cadbury's drumming gorilla spawns Facebook group

LONDON - Cadbury's drumming gorilla ad has proved so popular with the public that it has spawned a Facebook group, as well being viewed almost 500,000 times on YouTube the week after it was released.

The £6.2m Dairy Milk campaign, which features a gorilla drumming to Phil Collins' track 'In the Air Tonight', has inspired a Facebook group called 'We love the Cadbury's drumming gorilla ' with 201 members so far.

Tony Bilsborough, a spokesman for Cadbury, said: "We knew it would be talked about but even we've been surprised by the amazing response from the public. It seems to achieve what all ad campaigns hope for, the ubiquitous water cooler moment. We are absolutely delighted with the response so far."

He said that the focus now will be to stress the link between the ad and the "moment of joy" you feel when eating Dairy Milk.

Many bloggers suspected that the man in the gorilla suit was Phil Collins but it has been revealed that it was an actor called Garon Michael.

Michael has some experience playing a primate having appeared in the movies 'Congo', 'Instinct' and the 'Planet of the Apes' remake, and acted alongside Anthony Hopkins, Donald Sutherland and Mark Wahlberg.

Great TVC, I love it. As a planner type I love the idea behind it and the balls to brief one word. Please just consider it outside TV guys.

A drumming gorilla. Great! And the spin off must prove it's a hit! Just like er...those Hissing Sid and Captain Beaky phenomenon. And Blobby World. And the Budweiser frogs. And the 'Whassup!' guy etc, etc, etc. More transient flotsam and jetsam. Time will tell if it passes the 'Webster' test.

Actually....just noticed that there are actually quite a few duplicate groups, about 35 or so, with a total of over 9000 members on last count. not bad.

Such a great advert, but kinda confused as to why they would point out a group with barely any members whereas there are tens of groups dedicated to the ad, inc the highest one with nearly 2000 members: http://bournemouth.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5582041213

i would have loved to have been in the agency meeting when this idea was floated! Right, new ad campaign, i know - lets have a drumming Gorilla! Brilliant here's £6 million! Unbelievable! Has Creative execution really stooped this low to have no brand relationship whatsoever? Oh hang on, just throw in a purple backdrop and that'll do it! And the agency "sell" line is shocking "stress the link between the ad and the "moment of joy" you feel when eating Dairy Milk. Come on guys stop fleecing clients and come up with some real creative with meaning again....

I adore the link between the compulsive, eyrie joy of Collins best selling piece of music - enough to seduce and harness the raw power of a gorilla - and the joy of chocolate: both are primitive, fundamental and compulsive. No more needs to be said - except how nice to see and ad where concept, power humour and joy trounce snobbery to make megabucks. Rock-on-the-money!

Cadbury Dairy Milk is sponsoring the Great Gorilla Run on 22nd Sept this year. Perhaps there's a 'subtle' link there.
