FT woos new subscribers with free web content
FT.com, one of the few newspaper websites that charges readers to access content, is taking its first move towards a free model by allowing readers to access up to 30 stories a month.
The new FT.com model will offer a £99 per year subscription for a
basic access package and £199 for premium access, which includes a
function that optimises content for mobile devices.
Readers will be required to register at FT.com after reading five

than 30 articles. FT.com will introduce the tiered subscription charges
later this month along with a raft of developments to the site.
Improvements include a major extension of video content, new sections
(including an overhaul of the site's markets section), the introduction
of a series of blogs and a general improvement on performance, according
to FT.com.
FT.com has been gradually adding to its internet properties. A new
mobile news reader, blogging platform and online video features have
been introduced over the past 12 months.
It is also making its content more accessible to third parties. Search
engines and news aggregators will be able to access content on FT.com
for the first time.
Ien Cheng, publisher and managing editor of FT.com, said that the
website was offering readers a "third way" between the subscription and
free models that are most commonly used by publishers.
FT.com claims to attract 6.5 million unique users a month.
