Media choice: The Secret Diary of a Call Girl

by Amy Hitchenor, Director, Not Actual Size, Marketing 03-Oct-07

People were worried it would glamorise prostitution and trivialise the plight of sex workers forced into working the streets as a result of poverty, violence and desperation.

Well, rest assured, I doubt this will be the case. I imagine that after
last week's debut of the small-screen adaptation of The Secret Diary of
a Call Girl, those who thought there would be further furore are feeling

mildly disappointed.

At first glance, it may seem enviable to enjoy your job as much as
'Belle' does; to have the most fabulous 'intimate apparel' wardrobe in
Notting Hill; or to spend your week hanging out with friends at cafes by
day and dressing up for business meetings by night. Yet creator and main
writer Lucy Prebble appears to have played the metaphorical 'fluffer'
for The Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

Although based on the story of high-class hooker Belle de Jour (who won
awards in 2003 for best-written blog), it is hard to believe that Belle,
played by Billie Piper, enjoys sex with her clients when they look like
a cross between John McCririck and Hunter from Gladiators (except for
the cute guy whom she appears to be falling in love with from episode
one). Then there's her supposedly platonic relationship with best friend
Ben, who happens to be her ex. And how come her closest friends haven't
twigged she isn't a legal secretary?

I don't think we need worry that this sexy new TV series is going to
provide men with excuses to ease the guilt of paying for sex. They'll
have to stick with the usual ones.
