Adwatch: Vauxhall Corsa - 'C'mon - bike rack'
Having just come back from a creative workshop, I was really fired up about reviewing this week's Adwatch.
Sadly, there wasn't anything in this week's top 20 that came anywhere
near my post-inspirational expectation or the calibre of award-winning
work that I'd spent two days drooling over.
We have entered the annual period when supermarkets battle it out

your personality endorsement' competition. And this year it has gone
further than ever, with boybands, girlbands and multi-star groupings -
and most of them seem to be selling a voice-changing Darth Vader
mask.
The trouble is that as a consumer I'm not sure which personality goes
with which brand and what the difference is between one offer and
another. So I'm going to leave those ads, which make up a large
proportion of this week's list, well alone.
The commercial that I found most notable on the list was the Vauxhall
Corsa ad with the 'C'mon!' puppets and the girl cycling.
What made it stand out? The fact that it's really unusual for a car to
have such a new and innovative product. The number plate pulls out to
reveal a hidden built-in cycle rack - brilliant! It feels like a product
that's bang on the button. As a nation we're getting more
health-conscious and the launch of this product has been timed
brilliantly.
I first saw this ad at home, watching TV with my wife and two boys, and,
spontaneously, we all said 'What a brilliant idea.' No, we're not a
family of saddoes that constantly sit there rating ads - we only do that
sometimes. We were commenting as the general public would.
If I were in the market for a small car, the Corsa would be top of my
list thanks to this ad. And that's what an ad is meant to do, isn't
it?
Creatively, it had to slot in with the puppets and the 'Yo yo' mnemonic,
but the ad still got across what a simple yet smart idea this was.
Ultimately, I was inspired by an idea - just not an advertising one.
