HMV.com launches light-hearted Christmas gift guide

LONDON - HMV.com is attempting to suggest the perfect Christmas gift via a simple, three-step system as part of the music and entertainment store's seasonal digital marketing push.

The interactive gift guide is meant to be a fun way for shoppers to generate gift ideas for friends and family. It requires users to choose the kind of gift they want -- music, film or games -- and then make a selection from three different drop down menus.

It first asks users who they are shopping for, offering some obvious suggestions such as "wife" and "grandad" to the less obvious gift recipients such as "nemesis" and "imaginary friend".

They can then choose a style of music or film or the platform for the game they are choosing, and a price range. The website then offers three suggestions for gifts.

The gift guide was designed by Code Computerlove, as part of HMV.com's digital marketing push.

The retailer is also running email campaigns and has launched a 15% off viral voucher to draw in extra customers.

It comes as the store launched its first ever brand campaign at Christmas based on the theme 'The films you love for the people you love'.

A 60-second spot broke yesterday. It features scenes from nine Christmas movies, but does not include any price promotions, unlike previous HMV Christmas ad campaigns which have focused on the retailer's commercial proposition.
