The World: Paris - Sarkozy calls for ad ban on public television stations

Campaign 18-Jan-08

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, has called for advertising to be scrapped on the country's public TV stations. He wants to create an equivalent of the BBC.

He proposes that the revenue for the stations would come from a tax on
mobile phone operators and internet service providers.

The move would result in an ad revenue surplus that would benefit the

private broadcasters TF1 and M6.
