LONDON - An in-store and online fundraising campaign conducted in UK branches of KFC and Pizza Hut by staff and customers has raised £400,000 for the United Nations' World Food Programme.

Yum! Brands, the parent company of KFC and Pizza Hut, ran the campaign across all of the brands' restaurants in the UK and the US to tie in with the United Nations inaugural World Hunger Relief Week in October.

In figures just released, Yum! said the campaign had raised between $12m and $15m globally, with all proceeds going towards alleviating hunger in some of the world's poorest countries.

People who have so far benefited from the money include cyclone survivors in Bangladesh, communities affected by the earthquakes in Peru, and famine sufferers in Somalia.

Martin Shuker, chief executive officer of KFC UK, said: "The success of the fundraising campaign was only made possible through the hard work and support of our employees nationwide.

"Their enthusiasm in organising an assortment of charitable events all over the country meant we were able to raise a tremendous amount for the UN's World Food Programme as well as raise awareness of the issue of hunger."
